Sunny is deeply rooted in her heritage and community. Coming from a background of hardworking field laborers and passionate activists, Sunny's upbringing instilled in her a sense of resilience and perseverance. Despite facing challenges and setbacks, including legal hurdles in her youth, Sunny remained determined to carve out a better future for herself.

Sunny is the founder of Sunny Street Outreach, a family run, grass roots mutual aid movement that focuses on community, hospitality, and compassion. Their organization creates and cooks restaurant quality meals to feed the houseless and underserved communities in Oceanside, CA.

Surveys and information will also be available in English at this event.

El desarrollo del hotel y los eventos del taller están financiados por la California State Coastal Conservancy.

  • Gallery 201 - Arts District Liberty Station (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

How To Be Here is the newest art exhibition at Arts District’s Gallery 201 curated by David G. Fleet Curator-in-Residence, The Hill Street Country Club featuring Emerging Artists in Residence Helena Westra and Amanda DiGiovanni

This show brings together two artists working with found materials, sculptural interventions, and personal archives to explore survival as something softer than struggle—something tender, persistent, and deeply embodied.

Join us for the Opening Reception on First Friday, Aug. 1st! Meet the artists, curatorial team, and enjoy light refreshments. How To Be Here will run through Jan. 26, 2026.
August 1st, 2025 4-7 PM
Gallery 201, Second Floor, 2820 Roosevelt Rd San Diego CA 92106

About the artists:
Amanda DiGiovanni, is a San Diego-born multimedia artist whose practice blends sculpture, performance, and photography into immersive, thought-provoking experiences. Her work examines what it means to be human in a constantly shifting world while consistently pushing artistic boundaries and expressions.

Helena Westra, who works with earthy materials like clay, dirt and found materials, creates sculptures and land art that speak to ancient symbols and archetypes. Blending land art with spiritual and symbolic themes, her sculptures explore archetypes and the human connection to nature. With this background, her portion of the joint exhibit emerges from the physical body, its cycles, limitations, and landscapes.

Welcome to the inaugural Tender Riots, tickets are on sale now! Our first few kick off events will be for Queer Femme, Non Binary and Trans Folx as we believe that y'all will be the most impactful stewards of our dance floor culture. Our mission is to fortify the sanctuary of our bodies, minds and souls so that we may be more prepared to handle whatever Earth school is going to throw our way. We celebrate queer beauty in all its depth through music that will dance both our darkest and our lightest emotions. We dance the revolution. Live DJ sets will follow some short guidance around exploring our bodies and regulating our nervous systems. Your DJ will provide some light vocal cues to support dancers in connecting to their bodies and one another throughout the set. These parties happen in the early evenings where drugs and alcohol are not at the center. This one is hosted by the Hill Street, a really dope non profit in Oceanside CA aimed to diversify the art community in North County San Diego and uplift artists of color. Come dance the revolution with us, Oct 19th Oceanside San Diego at 7pm. More info to come but you can also read all about it on the ticket sales page.

Opening Reception: Vanessa Rishel | Safe Haven, Dark Corners, a Solo Exhibition

  • The Hill Street Country Club Gallery (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Hill Street Country Club is thrilled to announce the opening of "Safe Haven, Dark Corners," a powerful solo exhibition by South Bay San Diego artist Vanessa Rishel. The show will run from September 21st to November 10th, with a special opening reception on September 21st from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Vanessa Rishel's latest body of work delves into the complex realms of the psyche, utilizing dreamscape themes and a striking contrast of light and dark to explore the inner workings of identity and self-perception. "Safe Haven, Dark Corners" showcases Rishel’s unique approach to painting, where childhood trinkets, plushies, and anime aesthetics become models for her evocative scenes. This method imbues her black and gray scale oil paintings with a sense of realism and emotional depth.

The exhibition features "Insomniac Dreamscapes," a series that incorporates baby angel figures and elements of storytelling akin to comics and teen angel art. These elements are deeply intertwined with real anxieties and the quest for self-acceptance. Rishel invites viewers into a liminal space where memory, inner child, and personal trauma confront everyday harsh realities. Her work serves as both a refuge and a medium for exploring existential themes, encouraging introspection and dialogue about mental health and personal identity.

Bobbylicious brunch by Chef Sunny Soto create your own booby pancakes! Errverybodi line dancers led by Patricia Murray, a breast cancer survivor. Poetry reading from Berenice Badillo’s poetry book Treacherous Titties

Berenice Badillo was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2023, right in the middle of the restoration of a 1997 historic mural in Chicano Park that she painted when she was a twenty-three-year-old. Chicano Park houses the largest collection of Chicano murals in the world. She was also a recipient of The Far South Border North grant and the Living cultures grant. In the effort to not “waste her pain” as suggested by Audre Lorde in The Cancer Journals (1980), Badillo created content that explored taboo subjects on her journey through Cancer. This included educational videos, a resource website, a poetry book that will be given to newly diagnosed patients, and artwork that will be showcased in her solo show “Treacherous Titties.” Badillo and her girl gang XoQue art in motion completed the sixty-five-foot mural, the largest mural in Chicano Park done by women, for women, about women. The Coronado bridge needed to be shut down for its completion and Badillo along with playwright Mabelle Reynoso created a short documentary of the process. RSVP below.
